Few maisons embody the sense of romance and drama that has become the blueprint at Valentino. Where their peers attempt to blend various elements of streetwear into their collections to varying degrees of success, Valentino creative director Pier Paolo Piccioli seems happy to embrace the fantasy that is so engrained in the brand’s DNA rather than diluting it.

The introduction of menswear at couture shows and the merging of codes from their women’s line into the mens (opera gloves and capes forever) have presented viewers with a reminder that fashion is a chance for performance as much as it serves a function.

From the very beginning, maison founder Valentino Garavani had one simple premise that encapsulates the purpose of clothing for his namesake brand: “I know what women want. They want to be beautiful.”

And so do men, it seems.
