In June last year, it was announced that Virgil Abloh would team up with IKEA for a dubbed ‘MAKERAD’ collection. First displayed at IKEA’s Democratic Design Days, it soon took off as a hotly-anticipated collaboration and after 12 months of waiting, its finally hitting stores. Set to launch in Australia from November 7, MARKERAD takes classic minimalist designs and builds on them with artistic references and disruptive elements, signature cues from Abloh.

“I´m really glad that MARKERAD is now ready to meet with people and I look forward to see how these everyday objects will enter people’s homes and hopefully add an emotional value to them. Because that has been the ethos of the whole collection. In the same way you might hang a piece of art work on your wall, art can bleed into objects like a chair, table or rug. That was my initial problem to solve when creating this collection together with IKEA”, says Virgil Abloh.

The journey has been two years in the making, beginning in 2017 when the collaborative duo looked into what made a first home with practical and emotional aspirations in mind. It has resulted in a series of pieces including the wildly coveted “KEEP OFF” rug, first launched in Australia earlier this year when customers were selected in a ballot. Elsewhere, key pieces include the “WET GRASS” rug, MAKERAD chair recognisable from its doorstop foot, brown “SCULPTURE” bag that draws from the iconic blue IKEA carry bag and a MAKERAD mirror that boasts a carefully positioned crack in the corner. Other pieces include furniture like a table, a chair and a daybed as well as smaller items such as a toolbox, clock and textiles. Many of the products have multi-functions built into them like the daybed, which serves as a platform for sleeping, working, eating and socialising.
