Can you reinvent a classic? Technically speaking, you can’t. Reinvention is a contradiction. You can reinstate or revisit but it’s impossible to invent something already invented. The same goes for deconstruction. That fallacy word beguiling to creative types. While one can demolish or dissect, to deconstruct is nonsense. Much has been written about Dior Homme’s creative director Kim Jones and his reinvention of the label’s stoic foundations. And that his take on its conventional grey suit (a lusty, languid version) is deconstructed. Add to this his serendipitous inclusion of gown sashes as jacket lapels, Dior newsprint to saddlebags and a new, fluid streetwise style, it’s easy to see why. However, such labelling is pedestrian for his vision. Jones is an inventor and constructor of his own. He is a pastime futurist, a description for one who creates with retrospect already in mind. He feeds from the house’s rich archives while also surging forward. The result is a Dior for the romanticised, non-binary world of the 2020s. Where silks and delicate knits dress masculinity as artfully as tailored suits do. This is a modern Dior that looks back while looking forward, offering a kaleidoscope of inspiration that makes invention and construction possible, over and over again.
