Long before stadiums, sponsorships, and global broadcasts, sport was woven into the fabric of civilisation. The athletic festivals of ancient Greece, the cosmic rubber-ball courts of the Maya, the politically fractured chariot races of Rome’s Circus Maximus, and the Gilgamesh-era wrestling traditions of Mesopotamia all point to one thing. Sport is a universal language. A way for people to compete, celebrate, and come together. Its role has varied across cultures, carrying both triumph and complexity, but its ability to unite communities has endured to this day.
Today, sport occupies an unparalleled place in global culture. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 in full swing across North America, capturing the world’s attention, it is impossible to ignore the reach of institutions that transcend geography, language, and, in most cases, prejudices. For thousands of years, sporting events have been painted on papyrus, carved into stone, and immortalised in tiered, crowd-engineered architecture that still stands today. Few traditions have created such a lasting collective identity.
And yet, for all its complexity, sport has always returned to something elemental: the glory. A Mesopotamian wrestler’s legend passed down in verse, a Greek Olympian’s name etched into marble long after the Games that made him. As the spectacle and discussion run in real time, across every language and time zone, fuelled by statistics and highlight reels that immortalise a single moment the way papyrus and stone once did, the hunger for glory will never be sated.
