Star athletes and celebrities cleaned up for the annual red carpet

Now that the NBA Free Agent rounds are completed – at least for now – and the FIFA Women’s World Cup is wrapped up for another four years, star athletes and celebrities from around the globe gathered to the 2019 ESPY Awards overnight. Descending onto the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, the moves and shakers of the sporting industry paid homage to its most successful members.
What is considered the Oscars of the sporting world, the likes of footballer Saquon Barkley and up and coming basketball player Jaren Jackson Jr. were in attendance as well as A-list rappers such as Usher and Quavo. Australia’s very own soccer star Sam Kerr took out two awards during the evening and Zion Williamson – the subject of Nike controversy earlier this year – nabbed the award for Best College Athlete.
When it came to red carpet style, the looks were crisp with sharp tailoring while in true sporting fashion, sneakers were the footwear of choice. But perhaps the most apparent trend of the evening was the banishing of the tie for a bare top button or open shirt. Bold colour choices and fun prints were also a common denominator amongst guests.
