Britney Spears and her husband, Sam Asghari, are officially divorcing, ending their one-year marriage.

The news emerged after tabloid publication TMZ claimed the couple launched into a “nuclear” argument stemming from a cheating scandal. According to their exclusive report, sources close to the couple revealed that Spears’ 29-year-old husband confronted her over rumours “she stepped out on him.”

The source alleged that the musician cheated on the Iranian-American model, though no evidence to dispel or affirm the claims has been outlined, however, TMZ cites that Asghari believed the gossip.

The publication continued: “Sam has moved out of their house and is now living in a place of his own. As one source put it, ‘It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce.’”

TMZ claimed that Spears and Asghari’s relationship had been in “deep trouble” for months. They assert the couple have been embroiled in frequent “screaming matches” and “blowout fights” with things escalating to the point where Spears has allegedly “been physical”. They also add that security has reportedly had to “step in” during “volatile” moments.

Following the initial reports, Asghari took to social media to issue a response. His statement read:

“After six years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always. Shit happens.

“Asking for privacy seems ridiculous so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.”

Spears hasn’t issued any statement of her own, but she’s continuing to be active on social media. In lieu of acknowledging the divorce, the singer shared a photo of herself riding a horse on Instagram, writing in the caption her desire to purchase a mount for herself.

The couple, who met in 2016, have certainly endured one of the most tumultuous circumstances, with Asghari supporting Spears through her 13-year conservatorship battle.

Asghari was regularly seen wearing a #FreeBritney shirt during this period. Spears’ conservatorship was terminated in 2021, with she and Asghari marrying in an intimate ceremony a year later in 2022.

The wedding was held at Spears’ Thousand Oaks home in Los Angeles, with the likes of Madonna, Donatella Versace, Drew Barrymore, Selena Gomez and Paris Hilton. In the months leading up to the marriage, Spears also suffered a miscarriage, tragically losing her and Asghari’s first child together.

TMZ reports that Spears’ assets are reportedly protected by a prenuptial agreement, though they speculate that Spears may monetarily compensate Asghari during the divorce proceedings to “settle things, at least financially.”

New allegations have also been made, citing that Ashgari is “attempting to negotiate concessions beyond his prenup and threatening to go public with extraordinarily embarrassing information about Britney unless he gets paid”.

An inside told Page Six that they believed this report to be “blackmail” and that Spears’ financially compensating Asgari beyond their pre-nuptial agreement will “never happen”.

As per the BBC, the dissolution of marriage petition filed by Asghari in Los Angeles County Superior Court sought spousal support and his attorneys’ fees be paid by the musician.

More to come.
