Dolce&Gabbana’s latest menswear collection, entitled “Portrait of Man”, embraces themes of identity and individuality. Their Fall/Winter runway for Milan Fashion Week makes a bold statement described by the brand in a statement as a gallery of “living portraits”, where clothing serves as an expression of the self, directly responding to notions of uniformity prevalent in menswear. This collection is rooted in the brand’s Italian heritage, drawing inspiration from the human form and sculptural elements of Renaissance art.

Menswear can often have a repetitive nature of the same pants, tops, shoes, and jackets. Dolce&Gabbana rejects these claims, showcasing the range of silhouettes and fabrics existing within the space. This collection celebrates individuality, with each model showing off clothing, but also a complete identity. Here, a spectrum of male archetypes emerges that Dolce&Gabbana refer to as “a series of intimate micro-worlds, each portraying a different vision of manhood.”

The movement and light of the Renaissance art era inspire this season’s pieces. Textures and silhouettes are thoughtfully used in the design of these outfits to add weight and depth. Light contrasts with dark, and soft exists alongside the harsh, evoking memories of stories from the past.

Co-founder Domenico Dolce grew up as the son of a tailor. This heritage is ingrained into the DNA of the brand, where structure is an identifying feature of Dolce&Gabbana’s men’s garments. Tailored suits were modeled down the runway, each showcasing a unique identity and story, told through technical transformations of fabric. This classic garment is redesigned over and over again during the collection, where each suit tells the story of a different man, from a different life. Every suit is tailored to perfection, and complete with an element of luxury Sicilian verve.

From necklaces to sunglasses to scarves to gloves to pocket watches, sometimes the smallest details set us the furthest apart and let everyone know exactly who we are. ‘The Portrait of Man’ takes time to appreciate these fine details, using them not only as accessories but as defining characteristics of individuality and identity.
