Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino never does things in halves. Topping the charts in early 2018 with his bop ‘This Is America’, the RnB artist went on to win a slew of awards. And when he dropped his latest track ‘Feels Like Summer’ months later – of which was accompanied by a cartoon film clip – the artist also went one step further as to tease a new collaborative sneaker.
Announced by adidas Originals via a cryptic encore, the seemingly perfect partnership hit headlines in September, last year. Joining the likes of Kanye West and Pharrell Williams – both of which have gone on to create several models – a first in-real-life look of the new kicks has been shown, as Glover takes on the role of adidas Originals “Brand Co-creator”.
Modifying the classic Nizza silhouette, the traditional aesthetic has seen a deconstructed treatment in an off-white colourway. Just as the cartoon suggests, the sneakers also boast three-stripe branding, blue and white laces and co-branding in the sole. And unlike some collaborations which simply tag a name and fresh colourway to a pair of sneakers, we can expect Glover’s appointment to involve much more.
“I believe it’s important not to feel like ideas are bound by specific guidelines and adidas Originals has given me the opportunity to create on my own terms. I’m looking forward to seeing what that leads to,” Glover said at the time of announcement.
