There is nothing more timeless (or comfortable) than the basic hoodie. Worn by almost everyone on occasion, the hoodie is the godfather of utilitarian-wear and if you thought it was a more modern invention – you’d be wrong. Spanning back over 3,000 years, TED Talks has dissected its history in a short three-minute video.

As part of the organisation’s “Small Thing Big Idea” series on its Youtube channel, TED Talks has tapped senior curator of architecture and design and director of research and development at NYC’s Museum of Modern Art, Paola Antonelli to explore the concept and design of the “humble masterpiece”. From ancient Greece to today’s time, Antonelli explains and explores the good and bad side to the technical garment and how its has shaped our modern world.

Seen in ancient mythology, to ’80s hip-hop, Mark Zuckerberg and even as political protest, watch the video above and keep scrolling to shop ICON’s five hoodie picks.
