Trends are constantly changing each season, however one design that seems to stay put is the classic stripe – this season however the tables have turned, 90 degrees to be exact to bring in the vertical stripe. Whether the trend is found on bomber jackets, suits or pants, the one style you cant go wrong with is the staple button-down shirt.

Vertical stripe shirts lends a subtle illusion to your overall appearance – slimmer and taller – but if styled poorly the illusion can be quickly shattered along with your style cred. From linen to a heavy cotton, the style can be easily paired with jeans, chinos or shorts for an effortless uniform look. Stay tuned and you’ll earn your stripes.

Types of stripes

Deckchair Stripes. As the name suggests, the deckchair stripe is a classic British summer style most commonly found on the backs of deckchair dwellers. To avoid looking like you’re wearing a pyjama top, try a relaxed fit in a muted hue with either a short or long sleeve.

Football Stripes
Taking it back to the ’70s era, the bolder stripes seen on the uniforms of football players is back and making its mark. Usually seen on short sleeve style, the stripes are characterised by thicker stripes with alternating widths, seen in a combination of different colours. To keep the style from going OTT, try teaming the shirt with simplistic bottoms and a staple jacket.

Pinstripes.

Taking away the style from the office foyer and boardrooms, pinstripes have been reinvented in the last few years, making them super wearable from office corporate to a more smart-casual look. You can opt for a relaxed shape or a slightly stiffer look which tends to be of more use for in-between looks – classic colours like black and blue work best with this style of stripes

Banker Stripes.

Again a corporate style which is no longer exclusive to the office, the narrow banker stripes are still a viable option for the office yet also work well for the tricky smart-casual look.

This style from Mr P. also lends itself to the cuban collar design. Classic with the stripe print, the cuban collar has become a summer staple in recent years. For a preppy look go for the buttons all the way to the top or chuck a t-shirt underneath for timeless look.
