While he may no longer be in our midst, like they say “a legend never really dies” and in the case of Karl Lagerfeld we know that to be true. While seasons will pass and the identity of Fendi and Chanel will shift, its his influential quotes which will remain unchanged.

Creative director, photographer, head designer and all-round visionary, Karl Lagerfeld will always be known for his hilarious and sometimes controversial quotes. But the fashion icon and creative genius also sports many spots of advice (some helpful, some just plain funny). We rounded up our favourites:

On health and wellness:

“Don’t look to the approval of others for your mental stability.”

“Start your diet during a period of optimism and happiness.”

“I worked out a lot before I was 20. I was hard underneath. I had just a little padding. I was quilted. Always Chanel…”

“Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life so you bought some sweatpants.”

On style:

“When I was tired of the fashion for long, curly hair — because my hair was curly — I started to attach [the ponytail]. It was in 1976… It’s the easiest hairdo. I’m not very gifted for hairdos. I don’t like gel and all those products.”

“We need houses as we need clothes. Architecture stimulates fashion. It’s like hunger and thirst — you need them both.”

“Never use the word ‘cheap’. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you.”

On life:

“Work is making a living out of being bored.”

“Life is not a beauty contest, some [ugly people] are great. What I hate is nasty, ugly people… the worst is ugly, short men. Women can be short, but for men it is impossible. It is something that they will not forgive in life… they are mean and they want to kill you.”

“Forgiveness is too easy. I can forget by indifference, but not forgive. I prefer revenge.”
