It is the 2019 collaboration we’ve all been waiting for. After a slew of teases in publications and a line of cryptic Instagram posts, Pharrell Williams has finally unveiled his hyped collab with none other than Chanel. Aptly dubbed ‘Chanel Pharell’, the French fashion house debuted a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign as well images accompanying the colourful capsule.

Reworking Chanel staples as well as introducing new silhouettes, the collaborative capsule is an explosion of bold colour blocking paired with seasonal classics. Kit essentials in the form of t-shirts, hoodies and sweatpants are on show within the line, all of which are emblazoned in embroidery and diamantes. Finishing off the looks is a range of brights socks and bucket-style hats while the luxury treatment – eponymous with the Chanel name – is seen in oversized bag renditions, court sneakers and traditional loafers.

During the BTS teaser, Williams talked of his inspiration of the late Coco Chanel, while also paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld.

“Gabrielle Chanel, Coco, didn’t see partitions,” says Pharrell, whose work with Chanel dates back to 2014. “It’s interesting because neither did the brand when it came to giving me a shot. They didn’t see partitions. But they’re not afraid of these things. Just like she wasn’t afraid. There don’t need to be boundaries. As long as you can hold on to the heritage and continue to push it, like Karl always does, we don’t need walls; we need bridges.”

Set behind an eery backdrop boasting motorbikes and a slew of unique models, the all-round creative also discussed the influence of the number five and Japanese film, Akira.

Joining the club of luxury fashion houses that have moved into the streetwear realm, ‘Chanel Pharell’ collection is sure to be a sellout. The capsule will be available in Seoul on March 29, while it will see a global release in select boutiques on April 4. Mark your calendars and get in line.
