Perhaps it’s the Bernie Sanders effect. A condition caused by lockdown life that, upon seeing our favourite election meme, ruptured a deep-set desire to crochet our troubles away. Or perhaps, it’s simply the constant nostalgia. Our insatiable precondition to endlessly relive the looks of our youth, ever enamoured by its time warp. Or, maybe, it’s both. Take By Seay, for example. A Turkey-based small-time Amazon seller who has an emotional connection to needlework. A connection matched only by her affection for, it seems, the effervescent costumes of 1985 film Back to The Future.
While the outset is pure, the construction of her ‘Flying Bootees’ is impressively slick. Marty McFly’s original Nike’s, once seen gripping the tread of his infamous hoverboard, are given the Bernie treatment with this 2021 iteration. Cosy little sock-boots for your winter lounging. Complete with crocheted tick and an ankle strap (though she feels compelled to remind buyers it unfortunately does not include automated self-lacing) it’s cosplay so humble yet so ironically fresh. Perhaps they’re the evolved option Marty found when Doc sent the DeLorean into 2021, in the never released Back To Future Lockdown (why wasn’t that in the Almanac?). Either way, supporting the global family of home-manufacturing is essential for our times. Community spending is the way forward. Send more hand-crafters viral, we say. Start here.
