Fun fact: there is just under six weeks until the end of 2019. And with the turn of the year, is the turn of a decade and it’s safe to say when it comes to fashion, the past year has not disappointed. While we devastatingly said goodbye to legend Karl Lagerfeld, the year in question also ushered in a new generation of designers, and further concreted trailblazers such as Kim Jones and Virgil Abloh. Every year, fashion search platform Lyst reveals its ‘Year in Fashion’ report and this week, the results are in.
When it came to movements, expectedly sustainability and inclusivity reigned strong. In menswear and no surprise, Timothée Chalamet, Harry Styles and Billy Porter were this year’s ‘Power Dressers’ while breakout brands included Bottega Veneta, Jacquemus and Pyer Moss. For self-confessed sneaker heads, the ‘Sneaker of the Year’ was in fact more pared back than imagined, with the Alexander McQueen oversized sneakers topping the list for most searched kicks in the first quarter (we called the regression of ugly sneakers, here). And as for collaborations, Off-White x IKEA and Sacai x Nike were some of the most sought-out collaborations.
But when it comes to the year’s biggest ‘moods’, it came as no surprise. For menswear, statement tailoring, psychedelia, streetwear and survivalist styles were the coveted looks of the year. And while we look to a refreshed decade, it doesn’t mean we can rock the trends into the new year. Shop ICON’s picks on the biggest trends of 2019, below.
