So apparently, this is what coffee heaven looks like. Way back in 2016, coffee mogul Starbucks announced the launch of its Reserve Roastery in Tokyo. Set to be inspired by the same reserve in Capitol Hill, Seattle, the space has been designed Kengo Kuma and now, we have a look into the impressive space.

With spaces found across North America, Shanghai and the more recent Milan location, the next venture is situated in the Nakameguro district of Tokyo. Drawing cultural references from the area, the Reserve Roastery’s design is inspired by the cherry blossom trees that line the Meguro river. Blending seamlessly into the area, glass walls and terraced floors offer views of cherry blossoms and the surrounding neighbourhood. Furthermore, the space draws influences from the local workers and craftspeople of Japan which provides an ongoing design cue throughout the roastery.

Spanning across several floors, the space hosts over 100 coffee and tea options, as well as serving Italian food and stocking exclusive merchandise. You can also head to the cafe in the evening for a drink at its cocktail lounge. Additionally, the Tokyo store will also feature the AMU Inspiration Lounge, designed by Starbucks to host community gatherings and workshops.

When it was first announced, Kuma said, “It is a privilege to lead the design for the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo where my friends, family and the coffee-loving community will be able to experience this unique retail environment. I look forward to building on my longstanding relationship with Starbucks to create a place that reflects the culture and people of this exquisite neighbourhood to become one of the most iconic destinations in the city of Tokyo.”

The space is now open. Take a tour below. We’ll patiently wait for Australia to be the next location for a similar initiative.
