2018 has been a huge year in sport. We saw the return of the FIFA World Cup, Winter Olympic Games, Serena Williams revisit back to tennis and Roger Federer leave Nike for Uniqlo. Indeed the industry has seen glorious events over the past 12 months but none have been more talked about than the likes of LeBron James and Colin Kaepernick.

This week, Twitter announced its overall stats for the year and when looking at the US it is no surprise that the two athletes came out on top – both icons in their own sports.

Like many years before, LeBron James has remained in the headlines for months. Following his philanthropist work in Ohio, upcoming documentary and endless Nike collaborations, it is no wonder that he has found himself as the number one most tweeted athlete of 2018 and with plans to continue playing in the NBA for at least another six seasons, we can expect him to have an even bigger 2019.

At the heels of James, Colin Kaepernick too made a name for himself this year. While his status as a NFL player held him in high regards, the controversial athlete has been thrust into the spotlight after an infamous campaign with Nike. Leading the fight and protest against racial inequality in 2016, the worldwide debate was reignited once again when he faced Nike with the caption, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Despite being unemployed since January 2017, there is an ongoing Twitter campaign #ProBowlVote to vote the athlete into the NFL Pro Bowl.
