If You Know, You Know: the phrase neatly sums up the discreet charm that has defined Loro Piana for the past century. Now, celebrating its 100th anniversary, the Italian brand is pulling back the curtain with its first-ever retrospective exhibition, taking place at Shanghai’s Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) from March 22 to May 5.
Curated by the renowned Judith Clark, If You Know, You Know. Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence offers visitors an intimate glimpse into the brand’s heritage, weaving together an engaging narrative of craftsmanship, innovation, and cultural dialogue.
The exhibition spans over 1,000 square metres, guiding visitors through meticulously designed spaces filled with archival materials, heirloom fabrics, and exclusive garments crafted specifically for the showcase. Highlights from the Sergio and Luisa Loro Piana Collection feature prominent modern artists—including Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Enrico Castellani, and Emilio Vedova—whose works underline the profound dialogue between art and fashion.
The exhibition aims to highlight Loro Piana’s devotion to sourcing the world’s rarest and finest fibres, which is a pursuit illustrated through intricate miniature landscapes representing the distant territories where these exceptional materials originate—from the pastoral expanses of New Zealand and the Andes to the remote plateaus of Inner Mongolia.
Visitors will also find themselves immersed in a unique sensory experience. A specially commissioned film features an original soundscape composed by Chinese artistic director Guo Wenjing and composer Liu Hao, alongside bamboo flautist Tang Junqiao and pianist Tim Zhang, seamlessly blending Italian and Chinese musical traditions. Adding further depth is contemporary artist Qiu Zhijie, whose ink-on-paper map bridges tradition and modernity, thoughtfully exploring the evolving world of Sinology.
