At the 2022 Oscars award ceremony Chris Rock appeared on the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to present an award. Amid his monologue he quipped,“ Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” in reference to her shaved head. Some of the audience laughed, some remained silent and footage shows actress Jada Pinkett Smith rolling her eyes.
In a surprise move that we are still unsure is unscripted, husband Will Smith quickly took to the stage and was seen slapping Rock in the face. It would have seemed fake if not for the deep thud that came from his microphone. Still, it had seemed staged until Smith returned to his seat. With a concerned-looking Lupita Nyong’o in the background he shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth,” to which Rock replied: “Wow… dude. It was a GI Jane joke.”

“Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth,” Smith yelled again. Yes, assault with hundreds of witnesses. The broadcast went to a commercial break and according to Variety, Smith’s publicist Meredith O. Sullivan came by him to have a discussion.
Following the break presenter Diddy took to the stage to introduce the 50th anniversary celebration to “The Godfather.” He addressed the situation, saying, “Will and Chris, we’re going to solve that like family. Right now we’re moving on with love. Everybody make some noise.”

In an Instagram post last year, Pinkett Smith announced she shaved her head after suffering from a condition called alopecia, a condition of hair loss. “Now at this point, I can only laugh… y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia,” she wrote. “Just all of a sudden, one day…it just showed up like that. Now, this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So, I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions…Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!”

In accepting his speech for Best Actor In A Leading Role, Smith seemingly responded and apologised to the incident saying, “Richard Williams was a fierce protector of his family… I’m being called on by God to protect my people.” He continued, “I want to be a vessel for love…”
“I want to apologise to the Academy, to my fellow nominees, this is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award. It’s about shining a light on everyone. Love will make you do crazy things.”
