It is no surprise that Airbnb houses thousands of quirky and unique properties on its platform. In fact, in the past it has seen colossal castles and the Great Wall of China as well as tiny homes, UFO’s, a house shaped as a shoe and an even igloos. Now, the accommodation giant is inviting visionaries to create their plans for unconventional stays.

Titled the Unique Airbnb Fund, the $1 million USD program will judge thousands of entrants and its plans for interesting living spaces, where 10 recipients will be funded to bring their ideas to life. The judging panel consists of actor Billy Porter, super host Kristie Wolfe (of the Big Idaho Potato Hotel) and architecture firm MVRDV.

The launch of the initiative is said to come after an increase of nearly 70 percent searches for unique accommodation. This has included shepherd huts, windmills and tiny homes. Speaking on the fund, MVRDV’s Fokke Moerel explained it “makes hospitality exciting. It will empower people to create new spaces with daring, imaginative and fantastic architecture. Personal wunderkammers will be created for guests to appreciate and be inspired by.”

Billy Porter announced the fund to his Instagram following of 1.4 million people, suggesting, “be bold and take risks. Life is full of colour – why shouldn’t your home be?”.

Applications are now open, here. Winners are to be selected on May 15.
