In what typically has been the biggest Hollywood awards show in the lead up to The Oscars, the 79th Golden Globe nominations have officially been released in anticipation for the spectacle that will celebrate excellence in television and film on January 9, 2022.
With a plethora of nominations going out to tv favourites like Squid Game and Succession, some of the Hollywood’s most anticipated films like Belfast, Dune and House of Gucci are also edging towards massive wins.
But while the Golden Globes has had its fair share of controversies over the years – from the scandal of ’82, to the time Brendan Fraser was assaulted, and more recently, the wave of complaints that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has a perpetual issue with diversity (or lack thereof) – Monday’s nominations were met mostly with deafening silence, as the star-studded nominees remained silent in what would normally be a massive career moment for any given artist.
Not this year, and not until diversity is met within the HFPA.
The hesitancy to celebrate the Golden Globes comes about after a damning report made by the L.A. Times was released earlier this year, unearthing that “while the HFPA’s ranks include a number of people of colour, there are no Black members.” In response to the Times report, the HFPA has since added 21 new members, six of whom are Black; banned gifts and favours; and implemented diversity and sexual harassment training. But it may be a case of too little too late.
And, after a year of ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests, it has been pretty difficult for the HFPA to bounce back. And rightly so.
So, expect next year’s award ceremony to look a little different. While the winners of the Golden Globes will still be announced on January 9, the format of the ceremony is still unclear, after NBC, the global broadcaster, cancelled plans to televise the awards in 2022.
And who knows, the nominees might even boycott the event all together!
In releasing the nominees for the 2022 Golden Globe awards, Snoop Dogg was on hand to announce the nominations, doing so in a way that’s very, well… Snoop Dog. A sign of the times, perhaps?
