In August 2019, Allbirds made a revolutionary move to expand its offering of sustainable lifestyle sneakers to socks and accessories. Earlier this year, the eco brand took it one step further and released performance sneakers, then court shoes. Now, the sustainable giant is driving forward further success in the space with a brand new era for apparel.
Released this week, Allbirds has ushered in a slew of sustainably sourced and made kit essentials. In a bid to slow fast fashion and phase out the need for wasteful methods, the New Zealand-founded, San Fransisco-based company is introducing t-shirts, knits and puffer jackets, to fill you wardrobe needs without harming the environment.
First up is the TrinoXO Tee, Allbirds latest material innovation – XO, a naturally derived fibre made from discarded shells from marine life, the second most abundant biopolymer on Earth. The chitosan from these shells has unique capabilities, allowing your clothes to stay fresh longer without relying on extractive materials like Zinc or Silver. And in a classic cut and various colours, the t-shirt will seamlessly fit into your look. The fabric is smooth, stretchy and I swear it feels like you’re wearing nothing (in the best way).
The next main line of apparel is knitwear. The wool cardigan and jumper is created with a knit from premium ZQ-certified New Zealand Merino and like all of the wool Allbirds uses, the merino is superfine and responsibly sourced. Don’t be put off by the material, it isn’t scratchy and feels like butter.
Lastly, Allbirds has introduced the classic puffer we all know and love but again, with a sustainable revamp. Traditional puffers are made from oil-derived synthetic fabrics, toxic fluorine-based water repellents, and down fill. Not anymore – the Allbirds TrinoTM Puffer is a unique take on the classic silhouette that unites expressive design and environmental responsibility. The exterior is made of a merino and tencel blend, with a fluorine-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) to keep you dry. Instead of traditional or synthetic down, our Puffer is filled with tencel and recycled polyester, creating an innovative and effective down-alternative.
This category expansion follows the closure of a $100 million Series E funding round last month which included Sydney-based firm TDM Growth Partners.
