Everything
If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t think any theme could top last year’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. However, as the who’s-who in film, fashion and music file into the 2019 Met Gala, I’m biting my tongue. Lined with hedges of pink roses and a blush carpet to match, the flurry of tulle, feathers and overwhelming sea of colour has set the tone for the remainder of the evening.
Last year, Katy Perry stole the show with a glistening gold dress and wings standing higher than the California Girls singer. It was spectacular and stole focus from the floor-length gowns others had opted for, but rivalling the artist at the 2019 Met Gala is none other than Billy Porter.
Following up from his streak at the awards season which saw pink capes and billowing ball gowns, the Pose star entered the red carpet on a black velvet lounge, carried by six shirtless men.
The look has been dubbed the “Sun God”, custom created by avant garde designer The Blond’s and included a bejeweled catsuit outfitted with 10-foot wings, a 24-karat gold headpiece, as well as custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and fine jewels by Andreoli and Oscar Heyman. As the icon landed onto the carpet his outstretching wings made an appearance – not bad for a Monday.
Being his first Met Gala, the actor nailed the brief and his debut.“I’ve been trying to get invited for decades,” he told Vogue. “Coming from the theatre and being flamboyant and campy my whole life, it was a breathe of fresh air to have this focus on the genre,” Porter says. “It’s what I do.”

“How am I going to top a tuxedo dress? It’s not about topping it,” he says. “It’s just about showing up and being the best bitch you can be.”
Preach it.
