Everything
When a packaging billionaire with questionable ties to government and the heir to a Norwegian salmon fortune are having the most fun with their fashion at a Met Gala, it makes you wonder what the point of being a celebrity is.
Celebrity – celebrate. Have fun. Be fun. Don’t turn up in the sort of white suit that looks like it belongs on a best man at a Southern wedding. You were literally co-chair for the evening, Chris Hemsworth. Step it up. The Balenciaga chip bag held by Michael Shannon had more charisma.
The theme of this year’s Met Gala, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion had so much potential. It’s pure fantasy. Perhaps many of them were aiming to be the Prince Charming their partner’s Sleeping Beauty. But it mostly came across as lacking imagination. For some, like Tom Ford, wearing an impeccable tux is his signature look so his Saint Laurent look made sense. He at least tweaked the details, choosing velvet ox blood for the blazer.
But personally, no one came close to the level of Met Gala appropriate but still extremely cool as Balmain creative director, Olivier Rousteing. The designer donned a a simply black suit but paired with shirt that had a three-dimensional carving of his face. Whether this was intentional or not, the look resembled the Rock Faces from the cult 80s movie Labyrinth starring Jennifer Connolly and David Bowie. A perfect reference for the evening’s fairytale theme. Coming in a close second is the Irish imp himself, Barry Keoghan, doing his best Artful Dodger impersonation in chocolate-hued Burberry.
The Loewe lads, Challengers star Josh O’Connor, Jonathan Bailey and Jamie Dornan, delivered the right kind of Victorian era dandy you’d see in a fairy tail. Dan Levy delivered a more literal take on the actual exhibition theme, Garden of Time, with a degrade floral suit. Actor Colman Domingo continued his legacy of nailing every red carpet , carrying a bunch of calla lilies while Hollywood star Jeremy Pope was giving us the perfect Bedtime Stories version of the theme.
