Bruno Mars has stepped back in time for his first-ever clothing line release, the Ricky Regal Lacoste capsule collection paying homage to the loose-and-fun vibes of the 1970s.

Named after Mars’ alter ego, the moustache-wearing Ricky Regal, the capsule boasts a selection of 70s-inspired ready to wear clothing pieces, as well as gender fluid footwear and accessories. Mars has long been associated with the culture of the 1970s, his music drawing heavily from the funk, soul and jazz beats that dominated the soundscape in that era.

Now the 10-time Grammy Award winner has tapped into that period, offering up a tight capsule complete with matching tracksuits, short-sleeved shirts, pinstripe velour shorts and aviator sunglasses.

The Ricky Regal Lacoste capsule collection also includes a spread of tees, polo shirts, trousers, slides and socks, many of which are marked with co-branded Lacoste alligator and “Ricky Regal” notations.

The colourway is pure 70s aesthetic, bringing together mustard yellows, rich blues and deep purples and marks the first time Mars has been involved with a capsule collection.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have been asked to do collaborations in the past, but it always came with guidelines,” says Mars in a press release. “Lacoste was the first and only brand that said, ‘Bruno, we want you to make this truly yours.’ The respect of such creative freedom coming from a heritage fashion house was an honour.”

The Ricky Regal rebrand may hallmark the start of a new chapter for Mars, who says, “When I’m on stage, my name is Bruno Mars, but when I’m making lavish, luxurious garments, I go by Ricky Regal.”

The Ricky Regal Lacoste capsule collection is available right now through 18 retailers, including Melbourne’s Subtype and select Lacoste boutiques, while also being available via an online store.

While Mars might have his hands full with the Ricky Regal Lacoste Capsule collection, he’s not about to quit doing what he does best: making music. The 35-year old recently confirmed he has been in the studio with Anderson .Paak, the pair are working under the name Silk Sonic. In further proof that Mars is the ultimate collaborator, Paak also appears in campaign images for the Lacoste line.
