Donald Glover’s alter-ego, Childish Gambino has just debuted his music video for his newest single, ‘This is America’, and it’s not for the faint-hearted.

The video follows Glover as he make his way through a large warehouse, in random sequences of celebratory dancing and strange restless movements and expressions. What seems to be a fun and upbeat music video slowly misleads the viewer to witness several brutal shootings, accompanied by changes in the music and lyrics.

The more times the video is watched the closer the story is understood. From the cars used and to the choreographed dancing, each is a reference to issues such as Black Lives Matter, the Charlottesville protests, police shootings, terrorism, and the Civil Rights Era. Directed by Glover’s Atlanta collaborator, Hiro Murai, the video and music is a political and societal statement.
