As the likes of Toronto Film Festival and Venice Film Festival round out 2019, awards season rumours are buzzing. With mere months before the red carpet season takes off once again, all eyes are on new film releases and amongst a list of strong summer releases – most notably Once Upon A Time In Hollywood – the next film causing Oscar buzz is the hotly-anticipated JokerStarring Joaquin Phoenix as the complicated and layered character of Arthur Fleck, the last trailer has been released.

Society’s cultural obsession with comics and origin stories continue and after an extensive look was revealed in April, we now see more of the man who was pushed into a psychological abyss. Directed by Todd Philips, Phoenix described the film in the past fitting in to its own “unique genre”, although its creation can be drawn from the Batman storyline and how the Joker became who he is known as today.

The official synopsis reads:

“A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.”

Teeming with the haunting laugh of the Joker that Phoenix so effortlessly executes, we’re ready for a scare in this new thriller. Set to be premiered at the Venice Film Festival this weekend, the film will see a release into Australian cinemas from October 3. Tune into the last trailer below.
