Ricky Gervais gave a simple rule for the acceptance speeches during his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes, “If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it a platform to make a political speech, alright? You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg .” But as the ceremony that made the #MeToo movement viral, political statements and light propaganda was expected and delivered. Ellen DeGeneres used the platform to speak on the LGBTQI+ community while Joaquin Phoenix made brief mention of the current Australian bushfire crisis, saying,“It’s really nice that so many people have come up and sent well wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that,” before pleading with the crowd to take on certain responsibilities including voting.
While Phoenix managed to hold back tears when paying homage to Rooney Mara, Tom Hanks became extremely emotional during a monologue. Taron Egerton was the next to bring on the very public water works after he shunned Leonardo DiCaprio to win Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Rocketman – clearly surprised by the win. On the other hand however, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood took out Best Picture for the genre of which also won Best Screenplay thanks to Quentin Tarantino. Renée Zellweger came up against tough competition this year for her captivating role in Judy, and was vying for Best Actress along with Saoirse Ronan, Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Thernon. Best Picture went deservingly to Sam Mendes for 1917, as it told a war story with ‘one shot’, an experimental film technique which ultimately paid off for the filmmaker.
As for diversity, there wasn’t much at all. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire last year during the nominee announcements as it was found that out of 30 film-acting nominees, only two were black (Eddie Murphy, for Dolemite Is My Name, and Cynthia Erivo for Harriet); in total, five actors of colour were shortlisted. Neither won accolades and as for women directors, many were snubbed. It was a predictable start to the awards season but in no way undeserved. It does however leave the remainder of the season unknown as to whether this will be another #OscarsSoWhite year. The world is watching.
