For those that don’t know, the banter between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds is all-time. In a recent video posted to Jackman’s Instagram account of 31 million followers, the Wolverine star congratulated the cast and crew of the Apple TV+ Christmas musical Spirited for being shortlisted by the Academy for an Oscar nomination for best song for “Good Afternoon”. The only thing is, he hopes the Academy actually refrain from doing so in fear it’ll boost Reyndols’ ego.

“Ryan Reynolds getting a nomination in the best song category would make the next year of my life insufferable,” Jackman said jokingly in a video posted to Twitter and Instagram.

“I have to spend a year with him shooting Wolverine and Deadpool. Trust me, it would be impossible. It would be a problem.”

Jackman begins his tongue-in-cheek piece to camera by saying how wonderful the film Spirited is, which stars Reynolds and Will Ferrell. He congratulates the whole cast for a job well done but leaves Reynolds out of all of his congratulatory remarks.

“I loved ‘Spirited.’ It’s a great movie, the entire family watched it and had a blast. I love Will [Ferrell], I love Octavia [Spencer]… and ‘Good Afternoon,’ I laughed the entire way through. It is absolutely brilliant.”

Jackman then went on to say, with absolute conviction and seriousness, “But please, from the bottom of my heart, do not validate Ryan Reynolds [with an Oscar nomination].”

Of course, those that know the movie stars will know this is all an act; a running joke, if you will.  The duo are actually close friends and will star together in the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise, in which Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine.

Jackman is currently concluding a string of Broadway performances for The Music Man before shooting the third Deadpool movie this year. The film is slated for a 2024 release.
