It sounds like the start of a bad joke, or, a really good film. Thankfully for you and I (and anyone begging for new content in lockdown), it’s the latter. Overnight Netflix released the official teaser trailer to Don’t Look Up which features a whole lot of star-studded names. Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence will lead an impressive cast for Adam McKay’s new dooms day film.

The forthcoming projects follows DiCaprio and Lawrence, two astronomers who embark on a press tour to warn the world of an approaching asteroid. It’s comedic and just a little serious.

The full cast includes Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Mark Rylance and Cate Blanchett. According to Varietythe A-listers didn’t come cheap with DiCaprio earning $30 million USD for the film while Lawrence earnined $25 million USD.

Speaking to People on the film, DiCaprio said of the writer and director McKay,  “I knew when I read his script that it was incredibly unique, as it struck an important chord concerning the modern world we live in. Adam has woven an incredibly timely message about society, how we communicate, our current priorities, and the climate crisis into an absurdly funny yet important movie.”

McKay is behind Oscar-winning films such as Vice, The Big Short and Booksmart. Could we see an awards season contender on the cards? Just imagine the red carpet moments with this cast.

In December 2020, Streep described the film as “eerie” given the current political climate. She said it is “about a global catastrophe, but it’s sort of funny, like ‘Dr. Strangelove’ for 2020, about global warming — a metaphor for that. The whole thing’s so eerie and odd and disconcerting.”

Don’t Look Up will release onto the streaming platform from December 24, 2021.
