Comic book lovers unite. Your favourite villain, the Joker, is set to get his own feature film, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, weeks of speculation has ended after Phoenix closed the deal with Warner Bros, set to begin filming in September.

Directed by Todd Phillips along with co-writing the script with Scott Silver, the studio has described the film as being an origin story and, “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Set to be more “darker and experimental in tone and context” than other comic book films, the budget for the film has been reported as $55 million, but is considered considerably lower than other crime films.

Warner Bros. has announced a release date of October 4, 2019. Phoenix, won a best actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for Lynne Ramsey’s You Were Never Really Here.
