For the past few seasons, artistic director Alessandro Sartori has taken an introspective approach to his design process. This has included taking presentation of shows back to the heart of the brand, the town of Trivero outside of Milan; taking direct reference for garments from the nearby nature reserve, the Oasi Zegna.
It has also been deconstructive in the way only introspection can be: asking exactly what is your purpose? And why is it thus?
Historically, tailoring has always been the purpose of Zegna. But as menswear evolved, the 56-year-old Sartori is seeing a new future for the brand where fabrication is the focus, and all else flows onward organically.
The manipulation of natural fibres such as Oasi Cashmere, precious vicuna and of course their peerless merino wool sets the family-owned company above and beyond when it comes to the material superiority of Zegna-made garments. Add to that Sartori’s technical expertise when it comes to tailoring and fabrication, this puts Zegna in a unique position to be one of the most experimental and forward-thinking brands in operation today.
