In light of the recent passing of visionary and artist Virgil Abloh, Mercedes-Benz this week revealed a special commemorative second and final collaboration titled Project MAYBACH: an off-road electric coupe designed to “inspire the next generation and forever question the status quo.”

The visually striking battery-powered two-seater concept car was designed by Abloh and Mercedes-Benz design boss Gorden Wagener and was originally meant to be revealed privately to the press but following the wishes of Abloh’s family, was exhibited to the public this week.

Revealed at the Rubell Museum in Miami, Florida, Project MAYBACH was made available for the public to witness between December 1 – 2, with early access offered exclusively to students from local design schools – a personal wish of Abloh’s.

Project MAYBACH pays humble tribute to the enduring legacy of Virgil Abloh, with the future-proof car exemplifying the very real possibilities of future luxury design.

“Mercedes-Benz is opening the world of our collaboration, and Virgil’s unique vision, to the public and we want to respectfully celebrate the work of a truly unique design talent, who created endless possibilities for collaboration through his unbridled imagination and inspired all that knew his work.” Mercedes-Benz AG.

When looking at Project MAYBACH, it immediately seems like a gift from the future; from Abloh himself. Every element has been built from scratch, with Abloh constructing the vehicle’s luxury identity true to his style, essentially innovating a new design language in the process. The result is a work of art that evidently pushes boundaries of function, style, and collaborative creativity that offers a real vision into the possibilities of future design.

Project MAYBACH

Project MAYBACH measures nearly six meters long and is adorned by a transparent bonnet (that houses solar cells which “increase the [vehicle’s] imagined range”) while on the inside, you will find a set-up that is minimal and visually pleasing; leather and textile-trimmed seats, a yoke shaped steering wheel and an expansive glass roof.
