The Best Dressed Men At The 2023 Met Gala And One Bad One
It was a night of diamonds and pearls and that was just the men
Pedro Pascal gave us bare knees, Lil Nas X gave us bare ass and Bad Bunny gave us bare back – these are the best dressed men from this year’s Met Gala. And one bad one because we believe in balanced coverage.
Considering that the theme of the this year’s Met Gala was centred around none other than the late Karl Lagerfeld,”Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty” to give it its official title, it was guaranteed that tonight was going to give us more camp moments than the year the theme was officially camp.
For all his flaws, Lagerfeld was the master of making and stealing the moment. His contribution to the world of fashion, vast. His entire purpose behind designing was to create a fantasy. Tapping into this latter detail was what marked the best dressed men of the Met Gala. Rosettes, tweed, diamonds and pearls – the ingredients for something great was there.
There were grades of fantasy, however. There was Lil Nas X fully realised fantasy wearing nothing but a silver thong some body paint and a whole lotta diamonds glued to his body and face. There was Jeremy Pope’s scene stealing train with Lagerfeld’s face printed on it.
Just the mere sight of Pedro Pascal’s knees (in Valentino) sent half the internet into meltdown while Bryan Tyree Henry did the perfect take on Lagerfeld’s personal black tie uniform. But it was A$AP Rocky, arriving fashionably late with Rihanna, who nailed the brief with a tweaked update of Largerfeld’s own look as he walked the runway post show in 2004 wearing a kilt.
But leave it to one person to let the team down and I’m not even talking about Jared Leto’s Choupette suit. Succession’s Jeremy Strong might be stealth wealthing his way towards the series’ finale but in reality he’s still a theatre kid at heart and tonight’s outfit – mismatched colours, decorative shirt front – was straight out of the costume box.
