Milan Fashion Week had seen nothing like it. Taking over the city in a blaze of colour and contemporary interpretations, earlier this year Moncler cemented its position as not only an outdoor pioneer but a visionary for future design platforms. A welcomed disruption to the twice-yearly platform of fashion week, the Italian luxury brand ushered in ‘Moncler Genius’ and with it, a lineup of modern designers and boundary-pushing labels.

Truthful to its motto: “one house, different voices”, the Moncler Genius hub has evolved with the latest instalment of its collaborative series. Following the likes of Craig Green and Hiroshi Fujiwara, Francesco Ragazzi’s Palm Angels makes up the eighth chapter of the style movement, taking to the classic silhouettes of the lifestyle giant. Beyond the borders of season, age and taste, the bold sensibilities and punk spirit of the Milanese label has landed in the refined world of Moncler.

Stemming from a photographic project on LA’s skate culture in 2011, Ragazzi’s Palm Angels has evolved to cast a spotlight on worldly subcultures and in turn has become known for its fearless, punk spirit. In a bid to create functional garments, charged with urban style, the collaboration has resulted in a series of puffer-style outerwear, reworked kit essentials and accompanying accessories.

Inspiration for the collaborative partnership is rooted around the clash of rarefied art gallery atmosphere and abrasive urban environment attitude. Candy wrapper metallics have been introduced onto oversized outerwear, cultural references are collaged across a series of jackets, pants and bags and graffiti is seen splashed amongst key looks. The slogan of the season is Mind Control, and immortalising the concept into the threads, pieces are finished off with studs, zippers and colourful interpretations of the Moncler logo.

“I started with the idea of a vandalised art gallery,” Ragazzi explains. “The purity of lines and form that are in a second moment clashed with a protest. Moncler for me is about the simplicity of a product that comes to life in many forms. I wanted to have that form broken.”

Rewriting the rulebook and bringing design direct to the customer, Moncler Genius is a continuity of the idealisms of the brand; to celebrate diversity and unique heritage in a digital era.
