First there was Dumbo, then Aladdin and the forthcoming release of The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. Over the course of the past 12 months, Disney has looked to recreate some of its most successful films into live-action adventures and next up on the roster is ‘Mulan’. Following the epic tale of a young woman who fronts a male persona to fight Northern Invaders of China, the fun-loving musical first conceived in 1998 will see rerun, albeit with a darker twist.

Slated to drop in early 2020, the first trailer has been released and gives viewers a first look at the modern iteration. But unlike its predecessor, it’s unlikely we’ll see any talking dragons (sorry Eddie Murphy), mischievous crickets and over-the-top dance scenes – though we can only hope. Recreated on a much grander and more epic scale, while the film will not depict a scene-to-scene copy, it will thrust the beloved story line into a more historically based film.

Played by Liu Yifei, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior embarks on an epic journey to fight the Northern Invaders in order to save her father. Fronting as a man, her spirit will be tested beyond limits and the Chinese law.

The cast also includes, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor.

The film is scheduled for release in March, 2020. Stay tuned for further details but in the meantime, tune into the trailer below.
