With the beginning of a new year comes promises to do more, be better and basically, transition into a much more accomplished, smarter and well-rounded person than you were, well, yesterday.

Though in the digital age, when we’re spending more time looking at our friends on Instagram than IRL, it can be tempting to take some time away from our screens, in favour of books (if that’s you, find Obama’s reading recommendations here), Netflix makes a brilliant case for itself by not only providing movies that you’d otherwise be spending your house deposit on to see at the cinemas – see: Marriage Story and The Irishman – but informative documentaries so you’re actually learning – and ticking off that ‘smarter for 2020’ box – at the same time.

Now that that’s out of the way, you can feel guilt-free in indulging in the most popular TV shows and movies of 2019, brought to you via data Netflix uncharacteristically released earlier this week.

As well as Martin Scorsese’s Oscars tipped new film, The Irishman, making the list, Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler’s film, Murder Mystery, and New Zealand’s first Netflix original, Falling Inn Love, were in the top 10, proving the rom-com era is well and truly returning.
