Those waiting for the release of the long awaited sixth volume of the fantasy series Game of Thrones, The Winds of Winter, will have to settle for a historical volume dedicated to the “monumental history of the Targaryen while they reigned over Westeros”. The book, entitled Fire & Blood, “is the chronicle, set 300 years before GoT events, of the Targaryen’s conquest of the seven kingdoms, until the civil war that almost destroyed the dynasty,” said the distributors to USA Today.

George RR Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, which was taken by GoT took to Twitter to elaborate: “So: not a novel. Everyone clear on that? Though there are enough stories here for twenty novels. Battles, bloodshed, betrayals, love, lust, horror, religious wars, politics, incest, historical revisionism, all the fun stuff … Oh, and there are dragons too. Lots of dragons.”

Fire & Blood will be illustrated with 75 designs by Doug Wheatley. Will HBO pick this up as a prequel TV series? Given the “definite” end point for GoT we hope so.

The book hits stores November 20 – mark your calendars.
