Star Trek fans unite: A new series is on the horizon and it chronicles the return of Patrick Stewart.

While Avengers: Endgame saw the end of the Cinematic Universe – at least for now – sci-fi and action fanatics can turn their attention to the latest instalment of the Star Trek franchise. Following up from the 2016 rendition Star Trek: Beyond, it will make up the 11th series in the collection and sees the return of Jean-Luc Picard (played by Sir Patrick Stewart).

A regular member of the X-Men franchise as well as the early Star Trek series from 1987, Stewart’s character last appeared in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemisis. Thanks to the sacrifice of Data, Captain Jean-Luc Picard defeated Shinzon and managed to escape – from there the timeline continued with Captain Riker negotiating peace with the Romulans.

Overnight, the first teaser trailer for the next web television series was released, courtesy of CBS All Access, and reveals the aftermath that takes place in the original timeline, 15 years after the aforementioned events. While the first teaser is short and sweet, it does create the scene for an older and retired Picard. The fictional year is 2387 and is set on a vineyard in France, described as a character study more so than a traditional event sequel.

“What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings? Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light,” Alex Kurtzman, executive producer of the new series told the LA Times.

As of yet, a release date is not known. Stay tuned for more information and in the meantime, tune into the trailer below.
