In 2018, Post Malone shocked – or, impressed – his fans after inking his face with “Always” and “Tired” under each eye. Back then, he said it was to “piss off” his mum but following several additions including “Stay Away”, he has since revealed in a new interview that its meaning stems far greater than simply keeping with the trends or giving his mother a reason to get upset. Speaking with GQ for his latest cover story, Malone explained it was more something to do with his insecurities.

“I’m a ugly-ass motherf**ker,” Post told the publication. “[The face tattoos do] maybe come from a place of insecurity, to where I don’t like how I look, so I’m going to put something cool on there so I can look at myself and say, ‘You look cool, kid,’ and have a modicum of self-confidence, when it comes to my appearance.”

The 24-year-old whose real name is Austin Post also opened up about his own mental health, citing the drug-related death of fellow artists Mac Miller, Lil Peep and Juice WRLD, and that he could have easily seen the same fate.

“Middle school, I would cry myself to sleep every f**kin’ day,” he revealed. “High school, the same thing. I tried to drink some beers to get rid of that s**t, but it just never goes away. And I don’t think that’s anybody’s fault; it has to do with something predisposed in you.”

Post Malone recently released Hollywood’s Bleeding, his third studio album.
