In what could be the most suitable casting to date, Australia’s Ruby Rose will star as Batwoman for an upcoming adaption on the comic book superhero. As part of the CW network’s annual crossover event, which sees characters from The FlashArrowLegends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl make appearances in each other’s shows, Rose will play a lesbian Batwoman – but that’s not all.

According to reports by Variety, the Orange Is The New Black star will also feature in a Batwoman series pilot, following release dependent on its success.

Ruby Rose took to her Instagram yesterday to announce the news: “The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honoured. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.”

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” the CW said in a statement.

The annual crossover event for the CW network is expected to air in November, with the tv series to drop in 2019.
