It was perhaps the biggest trailer flop of 2019. In May, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer to the film adaption of Sonic the Hedgehog following the release of Detective Pikachu. Featuring Jim Carey as a creepy Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, it appeared to be a great film. Except for the fact that Sonic looked a little, er, weird. With an elongated body, small eyes and lots of teeth, fans were in uproar over the character design. The controversy was enough to halt the release of the film to redesign the lead role. Now, the beloved creature is back looking better than ever.
Presented more like his gaming appearance from original character designer Naoto Ohshima, the blue hero boasts huge doe-eyes and more subtle teeth, with a slight darker coat of blue. Keeping his same sense of quirky humour as what was seen in the first trailer, somewhere in the distance, if you listen closely, you can hear an enthusiastic sigh of relief from the SEGA gaming community.
So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive with fans thanking filmmakers for taking a second look at Sonic. One posted on Twitter, “I’m officially dubbing today “Remember the Animators for the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Day”. Heroes.” And another also agreed publishing, “Guys if the Sonic the Hedgehog movie could pull itself together by the end of 2019, YOU CAN TOO!!!!” That’s the kind of positivity we need in our lives.
Slated to now drop from February 13, 2020, the film synopsis reads:
“Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.”

It’s honestly insane even LOOKING at the old Sonic design, it doesn’t even feel real anymore. It’s like we all collectively had a nightmare pic.twitter.com/a3H6OtHI3p
