‘Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker’ has been kept tightly under wraps since the last instalment in 2017. Now, during the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Disney revealed the long-awaited trailer, providing an action-heavy first glimpse at the J.J. Abrams-directed film.

The ninth episode in the worldwide phenomenon, the trailer features Luke Skywalker’s voice: “We’ll always be with you, no one is ever really gone.” This is followed by laughter, predictably from Palpatine, and while he was slain by Skywalker in the Return of the Jedi it may suggest his unwelcome return. And from the short preview, even non-fans will be convinced to follow the tale.

With a long list of returning cast members, including Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Disney made the decision to replace Director Colin Trevorrow with J.J. Abrams, of whom directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the film will be the posthumous role of the late Carrie Fischer.

According to a statement released by Abrams in late July of last year: “With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honour Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

For now, we will have to wait for more teasers and its anticipated release, slated for December 20. Watch the trailer below.
