As Surrealist André Breton manifested in his series of object-centred masterpieces, when regarded in a focal position the object can become as character-rich as any anthropological being. Here, the Tabby is removed from its atmosphere, turned a rich egg yolk shade of yellow, and catapulted into a new world. In analysis, ‘Meteoric’ spearheads a life less ordinary, and perpetuates the invigoration of free-fall, of leaping into lesser known sensibilities.
For the first time, the complete works of Coach Tabby Shoulder Bag 26 are presented in a singular collection*. An oeuvre of dynamic graphics in existential compositions, it marks a turning point in artistic sartorial possibility and ventures beyond the scope of needle-and-thread reality. Spanning cinematic fantasies, dreamlike opulence and meditative strangeness, this instalment is groundbreaking in its phantasmic execution of inanimate portraiture.
From imagining the quilted leather Tabby in a Hitchockian film noir, to giving interplanetary iridescence to a seafoam façade, to blending fear with fantasy in worlds of incomprehension, the works expel the expected and invite the inscrutable.
When Salvador Dalí journeyed into Freudian psychoanalysis, he found great freedom in accessing the unconscious, allowing him to bypass the real and fall into the surreal – a place where both non compos and sensory objects could exist together. By untying expectations from what should be and grappling with what could be he discovered the creative mind to be exponentially more powerful. Here, these Tabby works of graphic art ask us to open our minds to being as perplexed as we are persuaded, forgoing the barriers of sartorial non-fiction and instead tempting the purpose of believable fantasy.
The object of desire is, of course, what sets these works apart – making for a graphic thesis and conceptual analysis on why the Coach Tabby Bag 26 is both illustriously and romantically beguiling. It is a postmodern still life study, one that not only fetches wonderment but articulates all its favoured physicalities. The use of frontal orientation allows the viewer to notice its supple nappa leather fabrication, its iconic insignia clasp and its quilted tactility, and begs us to tussle with a brilliant dichotomy – that style can be as mesmerising in fantasy as it is in reality.

A conceptual musing of the unconscious mind, this work appropriates the Surrealists’ consistent use of distant horizon as a metaphor for ephemeral time. The use of butterflies, too, in both light and shadow, implores the importance of the Tabby being the central figure. Imposing and impressive it is poised, intimidating and without shadow, as though it is an apparition, appearing for a moment in time.

The beauty of rarity, of didactic supremacy, is explored in ‘Extra Celestial’. A work that centralises green as both a symbol of renewal and envy, here, the Tabby becomes the coveted. As though it has power beyond an earthly nature, the poetry of impossibility plays against the universal desire to capture fleeting fantasy.

This collection, though contrasting in tangents, conversely connects through themes of emotional proprietorship. Throughout, possession is featured as a subject, and is portrayed here as the desirable catch in a web. The Tabby is the prize and, using the art of cinematic perspective, is offered in an almost supernatural capacity. It becomes the heroic protagonist, a symbol of the power of keepsakes.
