Following a disappointing ending to True Detective Season 2, the network crime show has seen a long and tiresome break – almost three years. While it appeared that the series was all but dead and buried (*pun intended), HBO has made a surprise release of the first trailer to the third season.

The first and second seasons featured Matthew McConaughey and Colin Farrell respectively, and now, Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will star, giving the series a much needed lift. Playing an Arkansas detective named Wayne Hays, the series will follow the detective as he tries to solve a mystery from his past. From what is seen in the initial trailer, season 3 will be haunting, chilling and overall captivating, as Ali fronts the role.

First airing in January 2014, the anthology crime drama was created by Nic Pizzolatto. Similar to the structure of the first season, the third rendition will adopt a similar story line, with an unreliable narrator and two parallel timelines. The third season will also feature John Charles Dickson, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher, and Sarah Gadon. The show is set to return in January 2019.
