There are many reasons why the new trailer for Underwater already has me at the edge of my seat. The submarine, the sea predators, trapped at the bottom of a dark and eery ocean, but like any good thriller, I’m ready for more and at the forefront is Twilight star Kristen Stewart.

Since her breakout role in the Twilight saga, the 29-year-old has been busy appearing in the hotly-anticipated reboot of Charlie’s Angels and now the 20th Century Fox thriller and if anything, it proves that there is no beast Stewart can’t tame. The official synopsis reads:

“In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, and trapped in a rapidly flooding structure, a crew of six stationed on an underwater research facility realise their only shot at survival lies in walking across the ocean floor to a distant abandoned rig. In addition to the physical challenges of the journey they quickly realise they’re being hunted by mythic, monstrous sea predators hellbent on killing them.”

As the opening of the trailer is introduced with, “You are now 5,000 miles from land and you are descending seven miles to the bottom of the ocean,” it’s an apt and slightly terrifying backdrop. Directed by William Eubank known for his work on the 2014 film The Signal, the cast also stars Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr, Mamoudou Athie and T.J. Miller.

Underwater is slated to drop into cinemas on January 9, 2020. In the meantime, tune into the trailer below.
