Timothée Chalamet has always been a red carpet risk taker but the current bare chested approach he’s chosen for the 94th Academy Awards is definitely going to go down as one of his more memorable style choices.

An early adopter of modern twists to menswear – Prada bomber jacket, the Louis Vuitton harness, that silver Haider Ackermann suit – this Louis Vuitton outfit goes one step further. Designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, it is actually from Vuitton’s Spring 2022 womenswear collection. A nod to both the exceptional tailoring skills of Ghesquière and the fact that clothing is ultimately genderless and the only thing that it should be judged by is how it makes you feel, the finished product really speaks for itself. The man looks good.

But…

While the debate around ties at black tie events has continued to evolve courtesy of fashion increasingly become less hidebound with its rules, it’s one thing to turn up with your shirt collars in the relaxed position. It’s another thing entirely to turn up shirtless. For starters – he now has to sit the entire awards ceremony bare fronted. What if he gets cold? What if he has too many beers and gets bloat and now hasn’t got the grace of a shirt to hide this? What if I’m projecting?

Or maybe the young Dune, Call Me By Your Name and Little Women star has had a moment of genius. There’s nothing worse than spilling something down the front of your shirt and having to sit for hours on end with a stain on you. This way, he can just wipe it away no muss no fuss.

Completing the look was an absolute dazzling selection of Cartier jewellery, including a stack of rings and a necklace that’s basically a centrepiece for that pale, whisper-thin chest of his. Maybe he has a t-shirt tucked away for later in the night?
