It’s one of those 90s moments that you kind of forgot happened but it remains iconic nonetheless. At the 1997 premiere of The Devil’s Own, then-couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt stepped onto the red carpet with the same hair colour and cut, their parts sweeping the opposite way. At first glance it appears to be a perfectly executed power move but according to Paltrow – nearly 24 years later – it was actually unintentional.
To promote her new GOOPGLOW Hair Serum, the actress and wellness queen reflected on her most memorable hair moments. She told assistant Kevin Keating that they didn’t plan their “matching haircuts”. Keating then asked whether they both saw the same hair stylist.
She replied, “We went to the same stylist for the cut. Chris McMillan cut both of our hair like this.”
McMilan is best known for his work as Jennifer Aniston’s longtime stylist and the birth of the ’90s “Rachel haircut”. He also works with Selena Gomez.
Keating continued by asking if Pitt could join the conversation for his take on the cropped ‘do’s. Paltrow became strangely defensive and replied, “No. Why would we call him? No. Nobody asked me about involving Brad Pitt.” The assistant quipped, “He’s on my Grindr account though. Let me get him that way.”
Paltrow and Pitt dated from 1994 to 1997. She then went on to marry Chris Martin from 2003 before they split in 2016. In 2018 she married American Horror Stories producer Brad Falchuk.
In March the actress discussed her divorce from Martin with Anna Faris.
“I never wanted to get divorced. I never wanted to not be married to the father of my kids, theoretically,” she said. “But I have learned more about myself through that process than I could have imagined. And because I focused on accountability, I was then able to find the most amazing man and build something that I’ve never had before with Brad [Falchuk], my husband.”
