The Joker. When the name is first mentioned three words come to mind: psychotic, terrifying and creepy. But after the first trailer to Joker, while those assumptions still remain true a new word comes to mind – melancholy. After Joaquin Phoenix was teased as the Joker back in late September, we now see him in action for an official trailer.

Looking into the origin story of one of the most infamous comic-book characters of all time, the film will delve into the sad and heartbreaking backstory of a man who was outcast by society from the eyes of director Todd Phillips. According to an interview by Collider last year, Phoenix described the synopsis.

“I wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre. I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a… It feels unique, and I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting. I think, underneath the excitement of these films, and the size of them, there are these incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles. And sometimes that is uncovered and exposed, and sometimes it isn’t, and so I always felt, like, there were characters in comics that were really interesting and deserve the opportunity to be kind of studied. And so I think that’s what Todd sees appealing about this idea.”

In the trailer, we see his humble beginnings as a promotional clown before society beats him and ridicules the man. Soon enough chaos ensues over Gotham. It is sad, joyful and terrifying – all at the same time – and if this incredible trailer is anything to go by, we will be feeling all the feels come its release.

Directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese, Bradley Cooper, Emma Tillinger, the psychological thriller will also star the likes of Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. Joker is slated to drop into cinemas from October 4. Watch the trailer below.
