Dear Mum,

I’m not really sure where to begin in saying thank you for all that you’ve done for me. You’re my most indomitable and unwavering supporter, my rock, my hero and one of my favourite people in the whole world.

I am endlessly inspired by your courage and your confidence in yourself. You’ve never been afraid to be exactly who you are and to fearlessly defend your right to do so. I hope this is one of the many things we have in common.

I am endlessly grateful for your enduring support and encouragement. Throughout my entire life, there has never been anything I’ve felt that I couldn’t do, no obstacle too great to overcome, no hurdle I couldn’t clear. This is in large part thanks to the way you have always championed me to be unapologetically myself, and reminded me (even when I doubted myself) that I could do absolutely anything I set my mind to and to never apologise for my ambition.

I am endlessly indebted to you for instilling in me from a young age a sense of style and appreciation for culture. Your wardrobe remains to this day both one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen and one of the most aspirational (seriously – the thing is huge). You always supported me in my choices and self-expression, even the ones you didn’t agree with (like that time I dyed my hair orange – we can all look back now and acknowledge that was a serious lapse in judgement on my part).

I am endlessly encouraged by your wholehearted support of me living to my full potential – from who I love and what I do for work through to not commenting on how many credit cards I have and the number of near-identical black outfits I own (those last two may in fact be related, but let’s not address that now).

I am endlessly proud to call you my mother – a woman who is intelligent, compassionate, beautiful, kind and the most wonderful and caring mother I could ever imagine. I am so fortunate to have you in my life. As you once said to me, our souls are twins, yours and mine, and we’ve walked a path through this crazy thing called life before. I couldn’t agree more. Here’s to celebrating you on this day, and many more to come. Thank you for everything.

Happy Mother’s Day Mum.

With all my love,
Jake x
