After the fashion spectacle that was the Barbie press tour (complete with conversing with a deaf fan in sign language), we didn’t think we could love Margot Robbie anymore. Now, the 33-year-old Barbie actress has revealed that once her career took off in Hollywood, she helped her mother pay off the family house in Southport, Australia.
But let it be known, Robbie’s mother, Sarie Kessler, had first helped her daughter financially when she was starting out as an actress, withdrawing on the mortgage to loan her money.
“Everything I owed my mum, I had it written down. She’d take money out of the, like, house mortgage [to] lend me money,” Robbie told CBS Sunday Morning. “So I always knew, I was like, ‘I gotta pay that back,’”
“And then one day, when I made enough money, I just paid that whole mortgage off completely. I was like, ‘Mum, don’t even worry about that mortgage anymore. It doesn’t even exist anymore,’” she continued.
“Honestly, anyone in my position, you’d do that for your mum. Of course, you would.”
In a 2019 interview, Kessler—a physiotherapist who raised Robbie and her three other children as a single mother on a farm on the Gold Coast—said she had concerns when her daughter told her she wanted to be an actress. Kessler felt it was hard to make a good living.
“I really admired the way you set about deciding how your future was going to unfold,” Kessler said to Robbie in the interview at the time. “I remember the first time you told me you were going to be an actor in grade 12.
“Do you remember doing that movie? You loved it so much and you came home and said: ‘Mum, you’re not going to like this, but I’ve decided I’m going to be an actor.’ And Margot, my jaw hit the floor because you were at a really good school.
“You come from a family with a medical background and a family with a business background, and you told me you were going to be an actor. I was stunned…And now you could say: ‘Mum, you needed more faith in what I can achieve.’”
Robbie starred in Neighbours in 2011. Two years later she shot to global fame as Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf Of Wall Street. Since, she has starred in many box office hits including I, Tonya, Suicide Squad, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, Bombshell, and Babylon. Robbie is also a successful producer who has collaborated with her husband, Tom Ackerly, to create the production company LuckyChap Entertainment. According to Celebrity Net, Robbie’s net worth is USD$40 million ($AUD 59 million).
